Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.
This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from his dwelling.
Global Responses
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
