A recent study reveals that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these medications need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
