A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
